Sew Angelic UK

By Shandi Rokk

Though a little more expensive than the dresses I usually buy, Sew Angelic UK shop has good prices considering these are custom, handmade dresses.

Sew Angelic UK was created by a seamstress named Angela who is located in Pendle, Lancashire, in the UK.  Her shop offers a large and a beautiful collection of gorgeous dresses that she will custom create especially for you.

I want to tell you about a dress designer and seamstress who makes really nice, fun, high quality dresses!

Dresses that are handmade and custom sewed for you!

I recently started to browse etsy.com for clothes that would be more unique than what you may find in major brands and stores.

While browsing around, one dress really caught my eye.  It was the “Sew Spooky... Black Witches' Spells” dress by Sew Angelic UK.  It is so awesome.  The dress fabric was designed with the black crows and looked vintage.  It was almost Edgar Allan Poe Inspired.  The shape and cut is so gorgeous and would compliment any shape!  The design is pin-up or Lolita style.  It reminds me of the short Hell Bunny dresses or H&R London dresses that I love!  As soon as I saw this dress by Sew Angelic UK on Etsy, I had to have it!

We learned more about Angela from her profile:

“Hello! My name's Angela. I am a painter, designer and teacher, with a BA in Fine Art.  I started making my own clothes many years ago, have worked on costume for the stage, and I am passionate about dresses!!

Sew Angelic UK aims to offer an alternative to throw-away, high-street fashion. These are clothes to keep; frocks to treasure!  Inspired by the Harajuku girls of Tokoyo, my dresses are quirky, cute and girly with petticoats, trims, nets and frills...sometimes with a gothic or retro twist.

After sourcing fabrics worldwide, and using only high quality designer cotton fabric, each dress is handmade by me in my studio, situated in Pendle, Lancashire, and takes a minimum of 16 hours to make.  As well as a traditional sewing machine, I use an overlocker to achieve a professional finish.

Most dresses are fully lined, to help keep you warm even in the winter months.  Also, prom/50s style dresses are made with tulle netting underneath, so that you don't have to buy a separate petticoat.

The Sew Angelic UK range is also available from Callooh! Callay!, a beautiful little cafe and shop themed on Alice in Wonderland, situated in Clitheroe, Pendle, Lancashire, UK.  I have a studio/shop upstairs...if you're local, please come and visit!”

After ordering the dress, Angela sent me a message asking for my measurements and she started working on my dress really quickly. About two and a half weeks later, I couldn’t believe I got the dress in the mail!

The packaging was nicely done with the dress was so well protected in it with layers a nice soft tissue paper.

The dress is exactly what I was expecting and it fit perfectly.  The work is really well done and you can tell it has been made with love.

Here I am wearing my custom made Sew Spooky…Black Witches' Spells dress for a recent pin up style photo shoot. In everyday life, I wear it more in a gothic style, since this dress offers many possibilities and works for may different styles and occasions!   I give Angela and her creations an A+.

I had the opportunity to interview Angela of Sew Angelic UK.  Check it out!

  • Did you always know you wanted to create dresses? When and how did this come to your life? How did you discover your talent for this?

I've always been crazy about dresses and started making my own clothes as a teenager.  That’s when I dreamed about having my own fashion label!  However, I got side-tracked and became an English teacher instead.  Then a few years ago I did a Fine Art degree where I concentrated on painting.  When I finished I had the confidence to go back to making clothes and discovered Etsy where I could actually sell them.  I still do commissioned paintings.  But dresses and fashion are my absolute passion and now I've started sewing again and I can't stop ! I just like to make and create things and I'm a perfectionist.  So everything I make has to be of high quality.

  • How did you decide which types of dresses you wanted to specialize yourself in?

I love alternative fashion. I don't like the mass-produced, throw-away fashion you get on the high streets. Sew Angelic UK is all about Frocks to Treasure, Made to Measure...clothes that you want to keep, that fit you, and that help you express your individuality.

  • Can you tell us about some people that inspire you in your life and your work?

I am inspired by some of the other amazing sellers on Etsy such as Pixie Pocket, who is based in New Zealand. Her dresses are just fabulous!

  • Tell us about your creation process for new models of dresses? Do you have an idea in your head and then look for how to materialize it, or do you rather experiment with fabrics and then get inspired while you work with them and see the end result only once you are done?

I am always inspired by the fabrics first and foremost when I'm creating a new dress, and never know what it's going to look like till I'm finished. Sometimes, though, customers have come to me with their own ideas and it's really interesting to work with someone else and see what we end up with!

  • What is your biggest dream and goals in life?

One day I would love to have a 'real' shop where people can come and get measured in person, choose the fabric they like and the style of dress that they want.  Then I'd have a workshop in the back where I'd make everything.  That's what clothes shopping used to be like.  Ladies went to a fashion house or to a seamstress who 'dressed' them at her atelier. Maybe I should have been born a hundred years ago instead :-)
